Farm kids, Kuajok

These kids live on a 60-acre farm with several other related families. Their dad has more than 1,000 cattle and grows peanuts and sorghum for market.

Nicest dog in South Sudan. He likes to lick my feet after I go running in the evenings. I am threatening to bring him home with me.

Found this moth in my bathroom in Juba this morning. I put her outside.

Hammerhead Storks kissing, South Sudan Hotel, Bor

The Hamerkop's behavior is unlike other birds. One unusual feature is that up to ten birds join in "ceremonies" in which they run circles around each other, all calling loudly, raising their crests, fluttering their wings. Another is "false mounting", in which one bird stands on top of another and appears to mount it, but they may not be mates and do not copulate. Their nests are huge, up to 1.5 meters across, built with as many as 10,000 sticks.

Sausage Tree in Juba

Kigelia Africana - the fruits weigh 5-12 kgs and are poisonous. If you hang one inside your hut it will ward off whirlwinds. Wood from this tree is used to make xylophones that produce beautiful notes.

Marabou Storks, Bor, Jonglei State

These sub-Saharan storks can get up to five feet tall and have the longest wingspan of any bird in the world along with Andean Condors, about 10.5 feet. They eat baby crocodiles, among other things.
